How to Get Rid of Negative or Limiting Beliefs
Today’s video podcast is about limiting beliefs. I recognized I had one that was holding me back, jealousy. The more I improve myself, the more I discover thoughts that are holding me back. In today’s post, I want to give you the six steps for getting rid of limiting, negative beliefs that are holding you back.
Step 1 – Recognize
The first step to any problem or challenge is to recognize it. You need to acknowledge it’s there, don’t try to ignore it or say it doesn’t exist because it does. If you try to ignore the negative thought, it will persist and just create more problems, anxiety, overwhelm, stress, depression and so much more.
Recognize it, acknowledge that you have it and now move to step 2.
Step 2 – Write
After you have recognized the limiting beliefs and acknowledged that you have this limiting belief, write it down. You want to take the time to write down everything you can that surrounds that belief. The more details you write down explaining how it makes you feel, etc., the better. Don’t hold back!
Again, if you try to hold back, you are missing an essential part of the healing process. Write it down and go wherever your brain takes you, just let it flow.
Now that you have recognized the negative thought or belief and written it down, go to step 3.
Step 3 – Rewrite
The story you just wrote is the story that your brain has created over the years. It’s time to rewrite the story to be what you want it to be.
- What’s the relationship you want to have with the limiting belief?
- Do you want it to continue to hold you back?
- Are you okay with what it’s doing to you?
- How would you like to handle this belief?
- What is the story you want, that’s going to serve you?
This rewrite is essential because you need to teach your brain what the new story is, the new story around your negative belief. Here’s an example I had of a limiting belief with fear:
Fear is holding me back. I hate fear, it drives me crazy. Why does it have such a grasp on me? I just hate it….
This negativity was a small part of my story around fear. As you can tell, nothing is serving me. In my original story about, ‘fear’ I am allowing/teaching it to:
- Hold me back.
- Drive me crazy.
- Grasp on to me.
- And more hate.
As I wrote about it, I understand the dangers of using such strong words, that are not enabling, encouraging or supporting my dreams or goals.
Here’s the rewrite that encourages and supports me.
Fear and I have come to a mutual understanding and it’s a great one. He shows up to help me realize I’m growing and building but has agreed not to hold me back. I use fear to encourage me because I want to be the best at what I’m doing and I want to help thousands and thousands of people. Fear helped me understand that without him, I would not realize that I was growing and how to grow next. I have increased my friendship with fear and acknowledge that he needs me and I need him and together, we are unstoppable.
In this rewrite, you can see that I have taken this limiting belief, which was holding me back, driving me crazy and had a grasp on me. I have changed it to:
- We have a mutual understanding.
- He helps me realize I’m growing and building.
- Fear has agreed not to hold me back.
- Fear is encouraging me.
- Helping me be the best and reach out to thousands of people.
- Increased my understanding of growth and how to grow.
- A friendship that together we are unstoppable.
Every aspect of this rewrite is encouraging, supportive and empowering me.
When you rewrite your story make sure to address every negative aspect that may be holding you back. You want to train your brain that the story that used to exist, is no longer valid and this is the new story going forward.
Now that you have your new story, move on to step 4.
Step 4 – Tear Up Orignal Story
Don’t skip this step. Tearing up your original, negative, holding you backstory is part of reprograming the brain. You have had years of creating the negative story, but you don’t want to take years of retraining. Tearing up the original story is a physical, emotional and mental process, which is a whole brain learning concept.
You are telling yourself that the old story is no longer acceptable and this is the story that is to take its place. After you have torn up, deleted/destroyed your old belief move to step 5.
Step 5 – Save the New Story/Belief
Get a three-ring binder with some plastic sleeves or hole punch the new story and save it. You will want this story easily accessible, and by keeping it this way, it will be. By saving this story, it’s easily accessible when you are feeling down, depressed and overwhelmed. Read your saved stories and positive declarations in this binder to help you find hope, support, and encouragement. The fun part is step 6.
Step 6 – Read and Reread
To speed up the process of changing and getting rid of the old story or limiting belief, read this new story every morning and night. Read it with passion, excitement, and energy. Listen to music without lyrics while you read it. Read it by yelling it and also whispering it. By implementing all of these different techniques, you are utilizing the entire brain and connecting new neurons. You are creating a new road and removing the old road, helping you to change more quickly.
